Cosmic Ashtray

Cosmic Ashtray in Escalante, Utah, is like stepping onto an alien landscape. This unique geological formation, a large, bowl-shaped depression surrounded by jagged cliffs and strange rock formations, offers an otherworldly feel. The hike to the Cosmic Ashtray isn’t overly long—typically around 2 to 3 miles round-trip—but it’s a bit rugged, involving a mix of scrambling and navigating uneven terrain. As you approach, the views open up, revealing the ashtray’s vast, circular basin, which seems to sink into the earth, its colorful rock layers creating a striking contrast against the desert’s muted tones. The eerie quiet and the surreal shape of the formation make the spot feel isolated and mysterious. The surrounding cliffs and rock spires add to the feeling of being on another planet, and the hike itself, though relatively short, has a sense of both discovery and wonder, making it a hidden gem for adventurous explorers.

Lower Calf
Creek Falls

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a rewarding, scenic adventure that takes you through the heart of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The 6-mile round-trip trail is relatively moderate but does have a few stretches of rocky, uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear is a must. The trail winds through a wide, sandy wash, gradually leading you into a lush canyon filled with cottonwood trees and vibrant desert vegetation. As you follow the creek, the cliffs around you grow taller, and the air becomes cooler and more refreshing, providing a welcome contrast to the desert heat. After a steady descent, you’ll reach the stunning 126-foot waterfall, cascading down a cliff into a tranquil pool below. The sight of the waterfall, surrounded by red rock cliffs and the occasional splash of green, is breathtaking—especially in the summer when the falls are at their fullest. The sound of rushing water contrasts with the stillness of the desert, creating a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. The spot is perfect for a quick dip in the cool water or simply to relax and take in the beauty of one of Escalante’s most iconic natural treasures.

Spooky and
Peek-A-Boo

The Spooky and Peek-a-Boo slot canyons in Escalante, Utah, offer a thrilling, otherworldly adventure through narrow, winding rock formations. The hike through Spooky Canyon is a claustrophobic but exhilarating experience, where you'll squeeze your way through tight passageways, feeling the coolness of the canyon walls as they tower overhead and block out the sunlight, creating a mysterious, shadowy atmosphere. Just a short distance away, Peek-a-Boo Canyon is a little more open, with its vibrant, orange and red rock walls glowing in the sunlight. The hike involves some scrambling and rock climbing, especially at the entrance, but the effort is rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding desert. Many hikers combine the two canyons in a loop that spans about 3 miles, offering a mix of challenging terrain and stunning natural beauty. The narrow, twisting paths, combined with the brilliant colors of the canyon walls and the occasional burst of sunlight, make this an unforgettable adventure.
