What to expect

Tucked away near Kanab within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, The Great Chamber is a remote and unforgettable desert adventure that requires preparation but rewards visitors with breathtaking scenery. The drive in is part of the experience—expect 8–9 miles of deep sand, unmarked BLM roads, and rugged terrain that require a high-clearance 4WD vehicle and confidence driving in soft sand. Once parked, the hike is short (about 0.3–0.5 miles) but challenging, with a steep climb up loose sand before reaching the massive sandstone alcove and sweeping dune inside The Great Chamber. There are no services, shade, or cell reception, so bring plenty of water, sun protection, and recovery gear. For those prepared for the conditions, the dramatic scale, shifting light, and quiet solitude make The Great Chamber one of southern Utah’s most photogenic hidden gems.
